It's not like you to stoop to such transparent rhetorical devices.

I'm not stooping to rhetorical devices. At least not very far, given the state of my knees. <g> This is another one of those things that I can't prove because my memory isn't good enough to retain the detail, but I've been watching this government a long time now and I have, over the years, observe both Warner and Byrd stand up off and on in just this kind of situation and I respect them both for it given how rare it is. Perhaps I should have stopped with "they love their institution" and left the country out of it.

Byrd, the King of the Pork Barrel Spenders, should have packed it in a long time ago. Shades of Strom Thurmond. Never underestimate the power of the public pursestrings when it comes to returning somebody to the Senate. Some of these fossils are so enamored of the perks that they can't visualize themselves being put out to pasture. And please give no credence to this bs about love of country. The older ones especially are there because of the lavish lifestyle and their ability to grow rich with their cost-of-living-protected pension.
