What is it about Janice Brown and Patricia Owen that causes you to go for the "scorched earth" metaphor? My choice of metaphor has nothing to do with them. Perhaps I haven't been as clear as I thought I've been. I don't care what issue the partisans are fighting about. Whatever it may be this time or the last time or the next time, it's not worth destroying (scorched earth) the institution that is the Senate. [I have no problem with Brown or Owen. Don't know what would make you think that I do.]
