Many companies do the same thing. You should tour an aerospace factory, or any modern manufacturing facility, and you will see essentially the same thing.

What made Dell so successful was that they streamlined the entire supply chain and materials support system. They don't carry any inventory, so they avoid the material carrying costs and avoid the material obsolesces problems. They designed their products for ease of manufacturing, testing, packaging and shipping. All this adds up to getting the costs out of manufacturing. And, gives Dell a big edge over the other box manufactures. This type of manufacturing facility is best implemented when a company first goes into the manufacturing business. If very difficult to change an existing facility.
