NHP, the bottom line for me is that...

...I store all original photos on the hard drive in a file that says "unedited" where
they remain until I copy them to CD or DVD. I then copy the photos I like (or might e-mail or
post on the web) onto my desktop and do touchups. These I obtain from the flash card a second
time or copy from the "unedited" file using a thumbnail for reference. I intentionally shrink
the size of some of them files for the purpose of making them morebmanageable for mailing.

I have never ruined or degraded a jpeg file to the point where it became unusuable.
I am probably unnecessarily careful in this regard.
