With so many examples in at least 3 or 4 different locations, one has to wonder which it is. Or is it a symptom of the people ignoring the politics of the country, not caring? We're talking even before that........who are these people who are playing out their sick fantasies in Iraq and Afghanistan? Who taught them to put their dicks by the face of someone who is religious? That's not what I was taught in high school. Are they acting out their fantasies, or are they the fantasies of someone else? And where did they learn not to have any compassion for a person who is dying? Who taught them to beat someone's legs so badly......someone who is suspected of being innocent.......that those legs need to be amputated. Again, where did they learn that shit? They are coming from this society.......from this culture. Are we so decayed/corrupted that this stuff is SOP?What was it like being a German in the early Nazi years, with people like the Gargoyoles on this thread saying torture is OK? That's the sad thing. The Germans at least had the excuse that severe economic deprivation led them to fascism. We don't have that excuse. Sure, you and I are really disturbed, but the average American may or may not know what is happening... if they read it in the paper they may think "hell, our leaders are right and this is probably BS, we voted for our leaders, and this is the greatest country in the world, and I gotta get the kids to see Star Wars in 10 minutes". The latest polls indicate that's not the case; that people are finally getting angry. Maybe the American people are endowed with a long fuse. Only time will tell. I have to say.......its very disconcerting that the American press is not pushing the torture story. I was surprised when NBC led off with the Saddam pics tonite. Of course, when I thought about it, it makes sense. The Saddam story is about one bad butthead leaking photos. The Afghan story is something much more different and much more damaging to the reputation of the US. re: We long ago lost the title of good guys. This story only confirms what the world has been accusing us of for the past three years. There is a huge disconnect. What the world thinks, what the American public thinks. Is it the fault of the press? For that answer, read the posts of Peter Dierks. He refuses to believe anything bad about any GOPer.Why did the Germans put up with the Nazis? Why are Americans putting up with the torturing, murdering neocons? The Germans won't admit it but in their heart of hearts they were glad someone came along and stood up to the Europeans who in their minds had demanded such unfair retribution for WW I. And in the same way, Americans are glad that someone came along and stood up to the big bad UN and to old Europe. The info that you are looking for is right here on this thread. The thread is a microcosm of the US. When Harris says that he's glad the Iraqis are being killed, he means it. When Dierks says the Dems are amoral and the GOPers are the good guys, or that the mainstream press are not mainstream, he really means it. Its what they want to believe whether its true or not. So you got half the population forming public opinion from a place made up of mysticism/unreality/ideology. And then you have the Elroys and MMs who are more rational, more objective but ultimately think that being a good American is not finding fault with their country and who have bought off on the illusion that America can do no wrong; that America is when its all said and done, God's country. That perception may have been true right after WW II but has been lost in the 50 years since. We are much more common and self serving than these people realize. And then you have us...........who determine America's worth with every deed she does as well as with every transgression she makes. Our loyalty is not unconditional. It requires that America be as great as it claims to be. In a nutshell, that is what America is thinking at this particular moment....several different and conflicting POVs. And maybe that's why there is no clarity.
