And I was wrong; power required to overcome aerodynamic drag would rise as the cube of the change in velocity, not the square. (Yikes, its even worse than I thought! <g>). In your example, 8 horsepower at 50 mph would become 2 cubed times 8 horsepower or 64 horsepower at 100 mph, right? And that is because to force required to push the car (or any solid object) through the atmosphere increases as the square of the increase in speed. Now things like tire friction...power required for that rises linearly with speed, right? Its been a while. The Buick with 30mpg at 70 is really fantastic. Some of these newer cars get pretty good mileage. And of course the safety and comfort is much improved. The way we drive here in this country you really need all the safety features you can have. But there are lots of crowded cities in the world where traffic rarely get above 20mph, Manila is one, and in a place like that you don't need any safety features at all. Still, if the world really is approaching Hubbert's Peak then an altogether differnt way of thinking about our personal transportation will be forced upon us. Maybe Hubbert is just some illusion or just a ridiculous concept that is being used for some political purpose. Maybe there is plenty of oil. I watched Lee Raymond the other day on CNBC and they asked him some tough questions. He said in so many words that there is plenty of oil...and he didn't blink either. There are bound to be people in the world who know for sure about the state of oil reserves. Some of the Saudi princes would. You would think Lee Raymond would. Reagan, both Bushes and even Clinton don't seem worried about it. Time will tell. Slagle
