Iogen Corporation and others are developing methods to make ethanol directly from the cellulose in plant material. The sources can be crop wastes like straw and corn cobs, or purpose-grown perennial crops like switchgrass. The current method of producing ethanol from corn is a joke, but there's potential to wring out a lot of inefficiencies.
