Countries do not stay on top forever

And the US won't either, but to take anything that is happening now and project it in to a major decline for the US shows a lack of perspective.

You don't know that. In the early stages, the effected country is often unaware that it has gone into decline. However, there signs that the decline has started. Corruption is very common, spending is out of control, morality is being determined by religious fanatics, traditional principles are ignored and the world's premier democracy is starting unnecessary wars. We have lost our way and there is no one in a leadership position to get us back on track.

The spending for Iraq is a small part of the budget. I doubt it will be this high for ten years but even if it is its not an enormous part of the overall budget picture.

Doubting and knowing are two very different things. I am sure there were people like you in the mid 1960s who said we would not be in Vietnam for ten more years and that spending by then for Vietnam would be diminished if non existent.
