When I bought my home I made only about $50k and I live in one of the more expensive areas in the country. True I don't have a family to support but some places have houses for less than a third of what I paid, and if I had a family I'd have to dump luxuries like my over $100 a month TV bill and eating out for lunch a lot. If you live in a cheap area and you budget well you can own a house on $50k a year even if you have a family.

You forget that when you bought your place, you had to rent out a room to make the mortgate payment. That's not an indication of middle class. When you watch old movies from the 1940s and 1950s, a sign of financial trouble was having to rent out rooms to stay afloat.
