When analysing the rhetoric of the Right, it is important to realize that it is primarily aimed at the primitive brain. The appeal is to fear, to tribalism, to man's innate herd instinct and to what can be grandly expressed as humanity's baser instincts.

The pictures of Saddam were printed for just these purposes. The seemingly demented speech of George Bush is exactlingly calculated for the same effect, as is the hate speech of the radio and TV talking heads who are pushing the Right's agenda.

If the Democrats are ever to succeed in electoral politics on the national level, they are going to have to both expose the cynicism of the Republican's subliminal messaging and provide an attractive and simple alternative.

Imagine John Kerry abandoning his nuanced positions and actually using trained bears in his campaign and we're getting close to a successful formula. Hey, it works for Jay Leno. :)
