They may not be united during the day but the Republican Leadership sure can intimidate, threaten and armtwist well into the night.

My point is that it's not about passing votes. This is about cementing in current Republican gains so that they can't be removed regardless of the next election's outcome.

They've put us into a ruinous war in Iraq. Even if every single Republican House member gets voted out in 2006, we're still sitting on a ruinous war and $300+ billion in debt because of it. Regardless of the next election, we could be sitting on stacked courts (85% Republican) including the Supremes for the next 30-40 years.

The Republicans aren't looking for passing gains during this session or this presidency, they're looking for ways to make these gains permanent. They know the pendulum in public opinion swings but it won't matter if they can codify their gains.
