It feels like it is more about universal human rights, and fairness- it seems unncessarily partisan to cast it as support for an unpopular (at least among some conservatives) position- at least it feels that way to me.

I would agree with you that liberals are about universal human rights. (And I would contrast that with the libertarian focus on constitutional rights, both articulated and not.) But the subject we were discussing was a case that dealt with gays and was thought by some to be "about" gays so it seems reasonable to me to frame my argument about the liberal position with that constraint. There are plenty of other things that liberals stand for like the environment and universal health care that I also failed to mention. No partisan offense intended. Just trying to keep the argument tight.
