Slagle,
Good post.
If I consider my own extended family, which of course mirrors divisions in this country, the liberal side looks to Washington and government and views a gun not as a necessity but as a scandal.

Ah, but the other side, the side that is not liberal --- that side views Washington as an abomination, and is armed to the teeth, and I mean to the teeth, with some serious stuff, AKs and such and so forth.

I hope you are right about local elites. My sense of them is that they are confused intellectually, and are far too focused on short term gain, on trying to stay ahead in today’s game instead of thinking about tomorrow.

My guess is that with the first wave of real trouble, the liberals (in my family) will be demoralized. Their God will have failed not just abstractly but personally, for them. And don’t think we of the other side won’t let them know it too, and be around to draw some conclusions for them.

I really do think --- and I am not just saying this for effect, and because anonymity on the internet allows one to flap one’s jaw --- as I say, I really do think that the future of America depends upon economic debacle. The more Americans suffer, the more they feel pain in the marrow of their bones, the more they experience the consequences of a lot of stupid decisions (such as handing over far too much power to beltway bozos), the more they are forced back upon themselves, the better we are all going to be in the long run.

I feel nothing but contempt for the current Prez (is it Bush or Kerry.... never could tell ‘em apart....) but my disdain is tempered by a consideration. I think the current man in the office is doing a good job of fulfilling an historic purpose --- destroy the élan and morale of the America state.

The destruction of Washington is the health of America.

Anyway, keep up the good work,Slagle, and see you soon on the barricades.
