the northeast is against supports but when presidential election everyone running for office love the supports. kerry's position was all for ethanol. i believe the guy who ran against clinton senator from new jersey was for ethenol.. funny i remember before they announced they gave speeches against ethanol but no one running for president could write off mid west votes.

Last year Hawaii's state government took some actions in support of ethanol. Plants to make it from sugarcane are supposedly in the works, but I can't find any current info.

The ethanol debate reminds me of the OS platform wars in the 80s. There was a lot of indignant huffing and puffing about how awful Windows was when it first came out. But Gates kept improving it, and using his MS-DOS base to expand his market. Remember "vaporware"?

Likewise the ethanol lobby is using brute force to capture market share for a highly dubious product in the form of corn-based ethanol. But if the new cellose-to-ethanol plants work as advertised and ethanol becomes cheaper than gasoline, they'll own the market and the subsidies can be gradually phased out. I guess we'll know in about 5 years.
