if we tell them on X day we will be gone

Mike, my feeling is if we do that the "bad guys" will target X+1 day to make their presence felt. I would prefer that a timeframe be understood between the 2 govts, but not published. That timeframe maybe tomorrow or one generation later. It would ideally be dependant on the Iraqi govts capability to manage its own affairs.

There is only one way that the iraqis will ever fight for themselves in large enough numbers that we could exit and that is if we tell them on X day we will be gone.

We should do the same thing in NYC.

Give them a specific date to assume responsibility for their own security and pull-out all federally funded agents above the limits used in other cities.

that is if we tell them on X day we will be gone. Mike, I've seen you say this many, many times and can't for the life of me, figure out why you would think it is smart to tell the enemy when and where you are going to "stop" or "quit."

If we had done that in the Rev War and said when we would stop, do you think Britain would have just stopped and waited until we quit to come back in and take us over?

I think they would have waited.

If we had done that in the WWI or WWII, do you think the enemy would have laughed, and just said OK...we will wait until you stop. Then we will come in and take over.

I think they would have waited.

In VietNam, we DID say when we were leaving. So they stopped and waited till we left. Then the North VC took over, and ended up killing 10's of thousands of people in the area.

Is that what you want to happen again?
