Does the US not recognize La Hague?

US might choose not to extradite the persons being tried in the Hague. [Good luck pretending you've got the high ground in that "we're good, they're evil" mantra then, of course] That does not mean such tribunals cannot operate in absentia.

Re French - You are right. Terrible crimes have been committed by French military, notably in Algeria, and I don't think anyone has been tried and punished for it.

Such tribunals are relatively new phenomena, though. Despite widespread reports of civilian deaths, rapes, villages razed to the ground etc in Vietnam, I don't think anyone was charged, tried, and punished for those war crimes, either.

Personally, I like this new direction in which the world is going. War should not be a pretext to unleash the sadistic rapist in certain members of military. Soldiers should know that they will be held accountable for their treatment of civilians and even prisoners. And they should be tried and punished.
