Experts expect swelling migrant population to decline after 2008 www.chinaview.cn 2005-05-23 23:07:21 BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhuanet) -- The migrant worker population in Beijing is expected to grow slowly until 2008 when it may decline after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, said an expert on urban issues research Monday. At present, Beijing has 4 million migrant workers, and a quarter of them are construction workers. Most of the migrant workers are farmers from less developed regions of the country. According to the experts with the municipal academy of social sciences, there will be fewer posts in the construction industry after 2007 when preparations for the Olympic Games are almost ready. This, plus the city government's efforts to readjust policies for real estate development, will lead to decline in the demand for construction workers, said Feng Xiaoying, deputy director of the academy's Urban Issues Research Institute. He said the population of migrant workers in the city will not expand unlimitedly, as some people have worried. The revival of the old industrial bases in northeast China, therise of regions in central China and the development in vast west China will help divert migrant workers from the city, Feng added.
