I'm not sure what you mean by "sounds current". Perhaps that someone could reasonably say that today as well. Perhaps but the definition of words follows their uses, already 50 years ago liberal had come to mean something closer to social democrat that libertarianism (at least in the US), in common usage. Back than you might have complained that they were misusing the word and tried to get people to correct their usage. After another 50 years its more like your trying to change the meaning back to a previous meaning (a meaning that might be considered near archaic if the whole world followed the US practice in this matter). I think it would have been better if the usage of the term had not changed but I think we are stuck with it. In theory it could change back, but if it does change its just as likely to change in to a third unrelated thing as it is to change back to mean something at least vaguely like libertarian.
