Slagle, the way tyranny works is that the public supports them because "the country needs a strong leader". So, having millions of guns out there is not an impediment to tyranny. On the contrary, it enables those of like mind to support the tyranny.

Provided the rest go along with it near enough, or not enough to risk dying in opposition, then the tyranny is up and running.

It's the political attitude which has made the USA great, not the guns in the closet, which are not of great effect, other than for the occasional guy to go nuts and blast some people, usually their family, work colleagues, school mates, or neighbours, which is newsworthy but not really of great significance.

Tyrannies are not a single man and a few mates taking over. It takes quite a chunk of the population to support them. Adolf and Lenin, Mao and Pol Pot weren't just isolated madmen. They were popularly supported by enough people to give them power over the rest who were cowed.

Yo, Johnny Reb! Quit worrying about guns and start worrying about energy. That pinko Hugo Chavez down in Venezuela is yanking our chain and threatening to cut off the oil. So you good ol' boys need to fire up your moonshine stills and help us make ethanol!
