Among other things, politics is the art of creating perceptions to positively influence your plans.

My thesis is that this current round of fighting over judges is payback for the GOP's tanking of a number of Clinton's nominees and perhaps even for the impeachment. Since they are in the minority, a filibuster is the only tool available to the Dems. To use this extraordinary tool, the objects of it, i.e., the nominees, must be perceived as worthy of its use. In other words, they must be painted as constituting the second coming of Satan, truth be damned.

It's a tough sport.
