Hackworth is one of the greatest warriors we ever had. He had seven years in combat. If his MOH recommendation is ever approved his will exceed Audie Murphy's decorations. We have had other men like him...just not the publicity. Here is one I knew who recently passed. His awards DID exceed Audie Murphy's...

Hack was upfront and made the correct call very early in Nam. Nobody was listening, not even MSM.

I don't like or agree with the political transformation Hack underwent during the period he wrote a regular column for Newsweek. Somewhere along the line, he wrote a coupla columns I thought were outrageous. I quit reading him and Newsweek at that time.

we're not hearing that from the current crop of military bureaucrats who're afraid to spit without permission from the civilians.

We have the same problem today. Nobody wants to hear from the military, least of all MSM. The Generals (at least some) are speaking. MG Rochelle, The Commanding General of recruiting command, said last month that recruiting is becoming worse and forecast 2006 to be the worst ever.

Congress has their heads in the sand or you know where else. I have yet to hear a congressman or woman address the problem.

I'm curious to hear your opinion on what could be done. I can't think of any solution short of compulsory service.

I agree with you.
I also think we have to explore every other avenue first.
If General Rochelle is correct, he will probably be fired. But America will own one gigantic headache.

Hi Ed,
What concerns me is that we are at such a disadvantage with rogue states like NK and Iran now, given what you and UW say. A call for a draft will create vietnam style resistance. If there was no draft then, that war may still be going on today given our propensity for "as long as it takes comments" i am now hearing about iraq.
If all of us "resistors" back then would be really honest with themselves, they know the opposition to the vietnam war was directly proportional to the fear of being drafted and forced to go to be killed or kill in that order. Same would happen in iraq today. You get a little bit of that from the reserves who are now being abused by the system . mike
