Robert Briscoe was the first Jewish mayor of Dublin, in 1946. His son Ben became mayor of Dublin in 1988. A little known fact about Robert is that he ran guns for the IRA during Ireland's struggle for independence from the Brits. There is a lot more about the history of Jews in Ireland at this site: shalomireland.com The Jewish population of Ireland is now in a serious decline, however. There was always a lot of anti-Semitism among the Catholics, based on ancient feelings, but I think Pope John Paul's apology may have started to mitigate that. The Irish until quite recently were very isolated and there was not much travel to other lands because most people were quite poor by European standards. Only in the last twenty years or so have most Irish even met people with different skin colors. There is a lot of racism against recent immigrants and guest workers. There are always a few skin heads and bigoted people in any society who commit hate crimes. I am not sure who is responsible for the swastikas, etc., and what their motivation was. There is a writer for the Irish Times who is Palestinian, and the Irish are always rooting for the underdogs and very concerned about human rights in general. So the recent anti-Semitism could be related to the general sentiment in Europe which is not truly anti-Semitic, but anti-Zionist.
