The American military is a powerful force that paved the way for free elections. The continued success of a secure, free, and democratic Afghanistan is dependant on support from the US military, at least in the fore-see-able future

I would expect the elected leader to be cognisant of that fact, have some gratitude, and extend his hand as an ally. Obviously, if he loses our support he puts the security of Afghanistan at risk. However, if he even gives the perception that he has subordinated his administration to the authority of the US he will be eaten alive by the people of Afghanistan and places the region at risk of political upheaval.

The American authorities and the Afghanistan Administration surely recognize that there is a very tight line to be walked. If we cross it, we betray our cause and are responsible for the ensuing failure of democracy in the region. We don't want a puppet but an ally is essential. There is mutual benefit if we stay the course, which from my perspective, we are.
