I heard that Arnie lied about not being in the thrall of special interests but has spent something like four months outside of California raising money from special interests.

My logic tells me that you are correct. Arnold is not a crook. He's got enough money, now he wants the POWER, and won't take the chance of doing crimes to advance his political career.
His inlaws are coaching him for sure.
