crossy: I agree with most you've said, - BUT: we talk hedge funds here! and hedge funds only complicate things further... Moreover: if you want to couple retirement money/pensions to the stock market, normal people will ONLY benefit from RISING share prices. So my most humble personal opinion is: let's get rid of short selling asap! cheers - Laurin (who lived in the US long enough to have seen that the US system is NOT the general answer... - though admittedly the German system doesn't work anymore either... :-)
