Amid the hubbub surrounding the US calls for China to revalue the renminbi, equity investors could be forgiven for feeling slightly ignored.

Most of the speculation about the likely effects of any move to allow the Chinese currency to strengthen has centred on the currency and bond markets. Many equity strategists seem content to treat the question of assessing the likely fallout of a renminbi revaluation as more of an academic exercise than anything else. “If somebody told me they knew for a fact that the Chinese are going to revalue tomorrow, I wouldn’t know what to do about it,” says one hedge fund manager.
