"There is nothing in the Koran, the book of basic Islamic teachings, that permits or sanctions honor killings. However, the view of women as property with no rights of their own is deeply rooted in Islamic culture,..."

That may be true in some sub-cultures but it is definitely not true in the generally accepted scholarly interpretation of Islam.

Keep in mind that Mohammed married his wealthy employer. She owned a caravan business. During this time, in the tribal culture of Arabia, women were seen as equivalent to cattle and having little value in and of themselves. One of the reasons the Arabs initially rejected Islam, was Mohammad's declaration that women and men were equal and that the practice of infanticide on baby girls was forbidden. This was not considered practical or sensible from a barbaric and nomadic tribesman's perspective.

Women in Islam were afforded property owner status and equality with men from the start. In order to understand how Muslim cultures view men and women as equals you would need to understand the sociological viewpoint from their point of view... which is difficult for a Westerner.
