I think the man had about five wives. The rumors about Cary Grant trace back to the 1930s when he shared a home with Randolph Scott, when they were both breaking into the movies. I don't know how much the names of these long past actors mean to you, but Scott was a staunch, manly actor in Westerns, and I always liked him. I am not an "Oprah" type who feasts on celebrity gossip, but I do find these rumors fascinating since I grew up on admiring these screen heroes. Me, and ten million other guys, would have felt differently if we had known they were homosexual. If they WERE homosexual. Tyrone Power was another, and I think the evidence with him is pretty conclusive. I think the stuff about Lincoln in ludicrous. I have read a lot of historical books about the 1800's and know, as you do, that sharing beds, even in roadside inns, was common practice. Gays have always existed, but their current obsession with outing past personalities is pathetic and off-putting in the extreme. I liken it to the insistence of disabled people that FDR's paralysis be highlighted in his representations today, such as his monument. FDR strove mightily to lessen his disability and given that he worked so hard to be seen standing tall, it is a betrayal of his memory to insist that his image be changed now to wheel-chair bound. I think disabled persons should be encouraged to battle their limitations, not comfortably accept them as some kind of normalcy (which they are not). I know of, as I'm sure you do, persons who have made amazing advances from disabilities by dint of determination and courage, and I think they should be the role models. Getting back to gays and history, no one will ever know the truth about past historical figures who confined their sexual habits to the bedroom where they belong. Such outings are pure speculation. I read that Tripp's co-author for five years on the Lincoln book research disavowed the end product as "dishonest."
