Construction of an agricultural high technologies zone has started in the capital of northeastern China's Liaoning Province.

Li Baoquan, deputy mayor, said that the city will develop the agricultural high-tech zone into China's agricultural "Silicon Valley."

Covering 150 square kilometers, the zone will consist of a basic industries district, a processing industry district, a sight-seeing district and a central district.

The city plans to invest two billion yuan (240 million U.S. dollars) in infrastructure construction in the zone and six billion yuan (720 million U.S. dollars) in industries in five years.

Diary produce will be transformed into a leading industry in the zone, and the industrial output value is expected to exceed three billion yuan (360 million U.S. dollars) annually by the end of 2005.

The zone will also focus on the production of organic food, grass-planting, flower cultivation, fruit growing and deep processing of farm produce.
