Hi Slacker,

I dont know why Digitimes always seems to think that Samsung is a process generation ahead of where they actually are....AFAIK, they wont have a 8Gb part until the end of the year or early next year.

I think the 8Gb part they are talking about is a MCP product.

OTOH, it is true that high-density flash chips have been falling hard in price over the last several weeks.

Yes, the prices have been coming down in recent days but at the high-end we hardly dropped in the 1Q and if we are going to be off 60% yoy they will have to come down this and next Q. The 4Q also is also a possibility if the demand slips. I hope the elasticity of demand kicks-in soon. Personally, I think we need faster adoption of DV Camcorders, high-end USB's, etc. MP3 players helped in 1Q and Gaming in 2Q and both will help in the coming Q's also but DSC owners have bought the cards they need for now and will migrate to higher densities only if the prices come down (exclude the professionals here). Regular users with 4-7MP can do well with a couple of 512MB cards and no point in spending more money on the cards than the cost of camera that can fit in one's pocket. In my opinion, we seem to be a little bit ahead in the progress we are making in raising o/p compared to driving new applications that can absorb the supply. It maybe just by a Q or two but that could result in volatility in Sandisk in the coming Q's and this is unavoidable as you can't precisely bring your manufacturing progress in sync with user demand.
