I am thinking chicken and egg here mike even though i largely accept your thinking on this. What motivates the small family folks may have more to do with societal and economic changes that gave us two earner family out of necessity along with expensive life style needs/wants supplied by Dr. Spock and two generations of parents before who set this all in motion. Both my kids by necessity fit in that category and that limits numbers of kids and even the choice to have them at all in the first place. Either folks have to cut life style choices to the bone (sure way to severe recession) or cut family sizes(bad future demographics and depression). Now i am really depressed. mike

Mike C, I think you have pegged it....With all the Dems/Greens and lefties like Ralph Nader, the young folks who have kids can NOT put more than two kids in the back seat of a car because of the special car seats for kids of different ages. There is only room for two kids, and two adults in the car. THerefore, many people who have more than 2 children, or have other adults that must be transported around have resorted to SUV's....

Very much more expensive all the way around, and I personally have not seen a single chart or report that shows how many kids were killed and injured in the years before Nader's mandated car seats, versus how many kids are killed and injured today... or saved because of the car seats....

The recent effort by leftists in Seattle is a good example of this. "Let's get rid of those SUV's is their rallying cries, not realizing most SUV's are driven by moms driving the kids around town safely.

than do the real unselfish work of raising children

Raising children may be unselfish but producing them isn't necessarily. Seems to me that there is selfishness on both sides of this. People often have children to get a second chance through a fresh version of themselves through whom they try to relive their own lives. Or they have children to get someone in their lives who will love them. Or they have children without giving a second thought to whether they have the wherewithal to raise them properly and leave society to deal with the consequences. Do you really want that kind of selfish people to have children? Seems to me it's not so selfish after all to recognize that you wouldn't make the best parent and to constrain your reproduction accordingly.
