I was primarily making the statement that I don't think the concept of unconditional love works when we are talking about Americans' love for America.

Of course when you have dogs and children, even though you love them unconditionally you still do whatever is best in correcting misbehavior and steering them on the right path. If you don't, you have very spoiled dogs and children!
