Very few people *know* with any degree of certainty whether they will be good, bad or outstanding parents.

They may not know that they will be good or outstanding parents, but I think folks who "know" they wouldn't be good parents are probably right. If you have no patience, if you're still struggling with issues from your childhood, if you are immersed in a demanding or high-travel job, if you don't like being around children, if you need things orderly, if you have certain illnesses or disabilities, etc.

It's the difference between having a worldview which is optimistic or pessimistic.

I think there's some truth in that, but I don't see the nexus with selfishness. Nor do I see the nexus between optimism and procreation.

Some people are interested in raising children and some people are interested in scientific discovery or bringing greater justice or caring for the sick. I don't see where the former is any more optimistic than the rest.
