3GSM UMTS IPR Whitepaper by Bekkers and West "The Effect of Strategic Patenting on Cumulative Innovation in UMTS Standardization" ... tinyurl.com ... is a new whitepaper published in March 2006 by Dr. Rudi Bekkers, an academic who has made the study of the relationship of standards and IP -- particularly in the arena of telecommunications -- his ongoing life's work evolved from dissertations he published with others as a graduate student. He is currently a faculty member of Eindhoven Technical University's Department of Technology Management which itself specializes in technology standards development and contributes to European public policy development ... fp.tm.tue.nl This particular paper was evidently (apparently) output of his (and Joel West's) ongoing research for DIME (Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe) -- a network of European universities and social scientists -- which is sponsored by the EU's Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development ... dime-eu.org ... in conjunction with INTEREST (INTEgrating REsearch and STandardisation) which is a is a Specific Targeted Research Project (STReP) under the 6th Framework Programme (FP6). www-i4.informatik.rwth-aachen.de As I have mentioned before, I consider Bekker's 2nd book "Mobile Telecommunications Standards: UMTS, GSM, TETRA, & ERMES" (and in particular chapters 4,4, 6, 7, 12 & 13) to be a fundamental must read for anyone following mobile wireless and attempting to understand both the opportunities for, and the challenges faced by companies that hold IPR in the wireless arena. tinyurl.com See also my prior post on this sunject here ...
