Kerry was not a loser. He had a very steep hill to climb and s short time to do it. Bush's war protected him a lot. Even Nixon won re-election with a war going on. A lot of people in the middle hesitate to vote in a new guy while there's a war going. One of the big reasons Bush started the war.

Like McCain in 2000, but even worse, JK was hit by an evil smear campaign trashing his military heroism and patriotism. The press was not "liberal" and did not come to his defence. As a result JK lost about 10% of the vetrean vote, voters who should have voted for him. Karl Rove was a genius but dishonest, dishonorable and ugly.

It is very hard to battle back against these type smear campaigns and JK did not figure out a way to do it. Bush also used phony terrorist alerts and voter fraud to help put him over the top.

If the election were held again, I doubt Bush would win.
