You have to calculate how long the ring will be and figure out how many soldier's per linear distance. If insufficient, gaps would have to filled with obstacles or mines. If Baghdad is 30 miles across (guess), a cicle at this diamter would have a circumference of 94 miles. 50,000 troops distributed over 94.2 miles is 532 soldiers per mile, or .1 soldier per foot, so a soldier every 10 feet. Thats not bad.

No, 50,000 troops are not sufficient. As Gen. Shinseki said before he was shown the door by Dumbya, we needed some 400,000 to 500,000 troops at the outset.

However, it is too late for even that now.
