The Great Fuji did in Shires' operation. Fuji became US Champ, which was basically recognized in San Francisco, Oakland and part of San Jose. But he got a better offer from LA. So Professor Toru Tanaka put on a mask and pretended to be Fuji. Pat Patterson beat Fuji/Tanaka and won the championship, but Shire got into trouble for billing a mainliner and then not telling the audience when he vamoosed. It sounds funny, but he lost credibility with the fans.

Patterson went on to the WWF and eventually became their booker and main script writer.

Ray Stevens was one of my all time favorites. He had no great athletic ability, but you knew he was tough. And evil. The only wrestler who did so well with so few moves was Rowdy Roddy Piper. I liked him, too, but at a much later date. His movie, Them, I think it was, was great. "I came here to kick ass and blow bubbles and I'm all out of bubble gum."
