I think it's important for people to vote their convictions and communicate with their political leaders. Our system is set up to do that.

I'm arguing against organized demonstrations, because they are costly, trouble-ridden, and exaggerate the true power of the organizers (otherwise they wouldn't do it). Our government is all too prone to bowing to the loudest voices, not to the best solutions. People who throw eggs at the Vice President, as they did in Portland, are just immature rabblerousers, and they should hold no sway.

Politicians do need criticism and communication. I write to my delegation from time to time. Sometimes they acknowledge my input. The most unsatisfactory response I had was from Patty Murray who said "I will be sure to keep your input in mind." Meaning that she would ignore it, as her positions routinely prove.

Remember Nixon got us out of Vietnam, Carter got Begin and Sadat to shake hands, and Clinton, well, Clinton did something positive too, although I can't remember what it was.
