I did that too - advantage with 401K is employer contributes too... In Australia they call it "Superannnuation Fund" - same concept as 401K, I can not touch that money till retired. Meets my requirement of "do not touch until...".

Your assumed interest rate (4%) is too low.

Long Term CDs have been available at much higher rates for most if not all of that 35 years including the past few with the prime rate very low.
