BHP takes tough stand after violent protests at Peruvian mine
2005-05-29 17:34 (New York)

BHP Billiton says it will not engage in negotiations with the protesters
threatening its Tintaya copper mine in Peru. The mine was force to cease
operations in the week ended 28 May 2005, after it was mobbed by 2,000
people. The protesters are demanding $A30 million in community development
funds and the paving of a 150 kilometre road. Lucio Rios, the mine's
vice-president, says the mine will not re-open until worker safety is
guaranteed. The Peruvian Government has held discussions with protest
leaders. Tintaya produced 107,000 tonnes of copper in 2004; Original article
