Mohammad defined jihad as life’s struggle to stand against evil and to put good into the world. Every Muslim knows this. He suggested that jihad is multi-tiered. You of course have the right to resist those who would harm you. You have the right to fight against them. This could involve physical combat, speaking against them, or just forming an attitude of disapproval. He clarified that the highest level of jihad would be to conquer the inner desires of one’s own heart that drive you to possess the things of the world.

He once used the following example as conquering one’s inner desires to possess things of the world: If a thief takes your coat you have the right to get it back; but, if you see that you can get by with out the coat, you could forgive the thief who may actually need the coat for his survival. Such an act would be the highest level of jihad.

This example is similar to the parable of Jesus… ‘If a thief takes your coat, offer him your cloak as well.’

”disavowing it, with it's aggression and violence.

but the truth is, radical islam has it's roots in the literal writings of mohammed, i'm not sure how the religion can ever be reconciled to civilized society, unless the writings of mohammed are taught without a literalist intrepretation....i'm not convinced the majority of muslims see it that way.”

Lots of corrupt things have their roots in doctrine that is interpreted differently by decent folk.

The majority of Middle Eastern Muslims are just like the majority in Western Society … they are desperately trying to figure out how the culture they live in will afford them a reasonable level of autonomy in living out their life in relative peace and safety.

The radical extremists are just like the LongnShorts of America. If you look different and talk funny you are an enemy that deserves what ever we justify doing to you in order to get our way.

Speaking of PfP, here's what's beng driven at:
"Our country is at war. And it’s a war in which victory absolutely depends on the Muslim world perceiving it as a war between the US and its allies on one side, and fanatical murderous terrorists on the other.

If it is ever perceived as a war against Islam, then we have lost. The world has lost. "
