"There were other paths to secure the oil." First it would have been right to inform the American people of the reason for involvement instead of making up a pack of lies to illegaly invade Iraq. A more open dialogue would have saved many 10s of thousands of lives. Second it would have been right to inform the American people that the dangerously growing dependence on Middle East oil should be handled in a manner that primarily focuses on conservation and alternative energy sources. And to DO SOMETHING ABOUT CONSERVATION AND ALTERNATIVES. Third it would have been right to pressure Saudi Arabia into giving a full and honest accounting of their reserves and capacity limitations.

We have been feeding Egypt and Israel in this way for many years in an attempt to leverage peace in the region. I agree that we should be pulling back or redirecting that to some extent. Oil is of course an issue; but, it is one factor among many that complicate the circumstances for this era. "There were other paths to secure the oil. Forcing Israel to deal honestly with the Palesinians and give up their illegal settlements would have won friends all over the Arab world." There are many things we could do. We should do them all. Iraq is one of them.
