I think you are right about the brainwashing. I've run into a few active duty youngsters here and they are certainly not thinking that they are participating in a war crime. Although, of course, they are.

One Marine I spoke with really frightened me. He was personally loyal to "George Bush". I pointed out to him that we are a nation of laws, not tyrants and that his responsibilities were to protect the Constitution and the rule of law. He didn't see it that way at all. He kept acting as if "George Bush" were his personal God..... I finally got so angry with the demented brat that I put him in a choke hold. I didn't change his mind, but I sure as hell gave him something to think about.

"he believes it is his duty to patrol the streets of Baghdad, and believes he is making at least a small difference, doing his part, etc.,"

God bless him. He is right. BTW, he is doing what UNSC Res. 1546 (passed unaminuously) asks him to do. Of course, the resolution also asks all the nations of the world to pitch in to help establish a new democratic free Iraq and it is disappointing that so few are willing to step up to the plate to do so.
