Re: This is what the "Non" vote is going to be all about.

The waiter overhears our conversation. "I say yes, yes, yes - but no to Turkey," he says. "They do not respect our way of life."

Most French have had their fill of Muslims for their former colonies, many living on public assistance. More from Turkey is more than most will tolerate.

It somehow highlights France's schizophrenia about her foreign policy... You're right about most Frenchmen's misgivings on immigration, Islam, etc. But then, you must reconcile that with France's anti-US stance and her opposition to the Iraq war. Keep in mind that, back in early 2003, France, Germany and Turkey all saw eye to eye on the impending US-led assault against Iraq. If, at that time, Turkey already had been a full-flegded EU member, observers could have rightly talked about a European Berlin-Paris-Ankara Axis...

Only a few months ago, Algiers, the capital-city of Algeria, was granted the Légion d'Honneur, a French distinction rarely bestowed upon whole cities....(*) But let's turn back to the eve of the Iraq war: France, together with Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg held a common "mini-summit" to show the world their common position... But what's left of it two years on? Germany is now in the midst of a legislative campaign that will likely result in Schroeder's defeat and Angela Merkel's victory --that is, France will be completely isolated, as far as her foreign/Mideast policy is concerned.

Personally, I find it worrisome because, of all EU countries, France is the one that enjoys the best relations with Arab and African countries... Of course, there's a lot of cronyism, paternalism and realpolitik driving it but yet, coupled with a sizable African/Arab immigration into France, it means that French geopolitics in both Africa and the Middle East must go beyond neocolonialism and military threats.

Without France, what's left of Europe's ties with the Arab/Muslim world and Africa?? Simply: nothing --N O T H I N G!!! Poland? Italy? Transmoldavia? The Netherlands? None is fit to take up the French legacy and credentials when dealing with the Middle East and Africa... Collectively, other European countries merely make up a loose gang of US yesmen. They'll lavishly snap to follow the US's each and every venture to bomb and "liberate" Third-World countries that "stand in the way"... until they themselves got kicked in their asses like Spain on March 11th, 2004. And that's not good for Europe.

Hence the French challenge: more Europe, more political Europe, yes to a European Constitution PROVIDED THAT it's about a FRENCH-led Europe. I support the French elite in its desperate attempt to hold sway over the European Union. If France fails to control Europe then the latter is destined to remain a pathetic "deputy sheriff", second to the American world sheriff --an eery prospect when one realizes that the US sheriff is a far-right, fanatical Jesus freak who wouldn't blink at nuking all the n**gers of the world....

Possible, but most in France must forgo the "grandeur" visions of Napoleon or De’Gaule both are dead so should be concept of the "greatness and rightness" of France system and their way of imposing it on others

Quit your whining and hurry up and get yourself a nice California house before the prices go up again....it is still possible to find deals.

For example, here's a little beauty..

.. 65 years old
.. 2 bedrooms
.. 711 square feet, and
.. a laundry room!

And it is only a touch over $800k - but you had better hurry.
