Slag, the silly Yanks were still fighting the war of independence and the dopey anti-British Irish Americans were against anything British [and especially English].

The USA puffs itself up, but all their ideas were English-based; the freedom, the democracy, the habeas corpus, private enterprise and all that.

The Indians kicked the British out and then suffered half a century of poverty. During the British era, there was a lot of development in India. Looking at it now, it's as though time stopped when the British Empire left.

Africa has done badly since Britain left.

If you include the USA as British [although it was long independent], the British Empire certainly spread civilization, in the individual freedom sense, far and wide. The rest of the world was all about murderous totalitarian rule by a chief or king. Look how Japan spread their empire. Britain, on the freedom scale of 0 to 10 was right up there at about 3 while the rest of the world was lurking around at 0 or 1.

Some countries are now up to 4!!
