"How does a non-creationist explain the fact that there IS a universe?"

Before attempting to answer that you would have to define "universe," which is impossible to do given present knowledge, so we are pretty much up against a brick wall there.

How does your theory of creation differ from creationism?

What is, is, is my most bare-boned alternative theory. I cannot explain why there is a universe. Chaos theory? I don't know. But it is easier to accept that there is a universe than that there is not only a universe but that God created it! Who created God? How did God do all this? Is that a Christian God who did all this? If so, then are all the Muslims and Shintos and atheists and everyone else going to Hell? Oh boy, if God is a Muslim, are we all in trouble! If God created everyone, then why are so many people so full of prejudice and hatred towards so many of God's creatures, like homosexuals and farm animals? So many questions, so little time. I would rather go enjoy the forest, regardless of why it is there, than ponder endlessly, because I don't think we will ever have all the answers.

I don't have a problem with scientific mysteries. I do have a problem with discounting evolutionary theory, and a much larger problem with teaching American public school children a bunch of quasi-religious indoctrination and sucking their little brains right out of their heads with the way way this country is going backwards scientifically right now.
