No country is perfect but where are you gonna find a better country?

It is a fact that the Saddam and Taliban regimes were brutal dictatorships. We overthrew them and with the help of allies and the (unreliable) UN, Iraq and Afghanistan are getting a chance to develop democratic governance and a better way of life. When our enemies are the likes of Saddam, the Taliban and Al Qaeda, it is amazing that people are able to be convinced that America is on the wrong side. As a direct result of our efforts, there is a clamoring for democracy in the Arab world - one of these movements even forced Syria to withdraw from occupied Lebanon. There is no guarantee of success in the long run and there is no guarantee that eventual democratic govts will be great friends of the US. But history indicates they won't be too dangerous enemies either.

Europe was a continent characterized by statist (fascist and communist) regimes for a long time - now that Europe is democratized the countries often undercut us diplomatically but we no longer have to worry about them militarilly.

During the Reagan years, the US abandoned a decades long policy of "realism" - ie. propping up allied dictatorships and instead fostered democracy. The result was a wave of democracy which swept over Latin America and southeast Asia.

Now Bush is extending this policy to the Muslim world. I think we should hope for the success of his policies.
