Darffot,

The 'right now' problem for MSFT is that you still need a network, and that is beyond the tech ability or desire of the average person. That of course will change... how quickly is an open question. There is no doubt that MSFT has a built in advantage, and things may play out very much as you suggest. Or, maybe they won't.

The IP issue is outstanding. Assuming it holds up, MCE may be in violation of a half dozen TiVo patents. If, as you say, MCE becomes part of the standard Windows OS, imagine the TiVo royalty stream from a successful defense of the patents. Huge.

Nobody knows how this is going to play out, or if another technology comes along and trumps both TIVO and MSFT. Fun to watch though.

John

another caveat is that you can't watch copy-protected programming such as HBO through the Extender. this is a legal hurdle as opposed to a technical one. not sure what the prospects are for supporting HBO, etc. long term.

Apparently this issue has been resolved. Download an update for your extender on microsoft's website that gives you the ability to stream CGMS-A protected TV content (like HBO).
