Yes. There was no science behind the revolting punishments prescribed for masturbation, just as there was none behind the stigmatizing labeling of homosexuals. It's a religious thing in both cases, I think. I'm no religious scholar, though. Some people probably still teach their children that masturbation will make them burn in hell, just as some would tell a gay child of theirs similar things.
