i processed taxes for elderly centers for five years. If you feel they should have to file income taxes for the peanuts they pay then find an easier way. The same thing on low income. Places like h & r block rip off these people more in fees than the amounts they have to pay. and flat tax is not the answer for them. I doubt very much they feel better about paying taxes. I expect many are upset are about it. certainly, my feed back was they were upset. Hopefully, we come up with programs that lift the low income into higher incomes and they do pay taxes but to tax them and then give them food stamps etc seems a little strange. The elderly i expect can hold their heads up high for the many years they did pay tax and now with very little income and high medical costs the last thing they feel like doing is paying taxes.
